Featured Campaign: Vrygrond Little Smiles

ABOUT WHERE WE WORK

VRYGROND
OUR GRASSROOTS

The impoverished Cape Flats community of Vrygrond is situated on the Cape Flats of Cape Town about 5 kilometers from tourist hotspot Muizenberg.

Vrygrond, originally a fishermen’s village, is a vibrant and multicultural community and is one of the oldest informal settlements in South Africa.

Vrygrond has a population of approximately 40,000 people consisting of all races and nationalities, including a growing population of asylum seekers from Malawi, DRC and other African regions.

About Little Smiles

Little Smiles is a non-profit organisation founded in 2016 by Nonkosi Fodo, who saw the plight of children in her community. She knew she had to do something and made it her life's mission to keep children busy and off the streets.
The organisation creates opportunities for youth aged between 6 and 13-years-old with the vision to see the youth of Vrygrond succeed and better the lives of others.

WHAT WE DO

Uplifting children out of poverty

With over 40,000 people in Vrygrond, we are on a mission to urgently uplift children and the vulnerable out of dire conditions. Here are some of the challenges faced in the community.

Social Issues

The community of Vrygrond is rife with gangsterism, crime and young people are often exposed to substance, physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect.

See our solution

Overcrowded Schools & Homes

Local schools are under immense pressure, with classrooms hosting 50 to 60 learners. A common factor in Vrygrond homes is overcrowding, which leaves limited physical space for learners to do their school work.

Poor Role Models

With few opportunities for a better future, combined with poor role models, youth are easily swayed to abuse drugs and alcohol and often enter into a life of gansterism and crime.

Physical and Mental Health
